Shooting for Socrates

We have joined forces with the phenomenal director James Erskine of New Black Films for the exciting new indie film 'Shooting for Socrates'. It's based on the lives of the Northern Irish football team in the 1980's. I know we're excited, are you?

Here's a brief synopsis, have a read: :)
November 1985, and the troubled streets of Belfast are torn up by rioting yet again. In amongst the angry mob, we find nine year old Tommy, nonchalantly dribbling a ball through the insanity. Whilst politicians argue over the peace process, there’s only one thing on young Tommy’s football-mad mind – the forthcoming World Cup, where tiny Northern Ireland will take on the mighty Brazil. For the South American giants it’s just another step on the path to inevitable global domination, yet for Northern Ireland, and young Tommy, it’s the biggest game of their lives.
They are two countries that couldn’t seem further apart: Northern Ireland, with its Orange men and Republican kerbstones, the Rev’d Ian Paisley and Fergal Sharkey; and Brazil with its carnival, its Samba, with Pelé and the ‘beautiful game’. On the football field, eccentric Northern Ireland coach Billy Bingham (they call him Mr FIFA – “a fee for this and a fee for that”) must plug together a bunch of misfits and third divisioners. Brazil are led by none other than the philosopher-captain (Dr.) Sócrates, who has, in part, inspired the collapse of his country’s ruthless military junta, and they are the hot favourites to scoop up football’s ultimate prize.
As bunting replaces bombs on the streets of Belfast, and Catholic and Protestants alike turn their attention to the big match, Tommy’s dockworker turned philosopher father Arthur uses his son’s passion for football to enlighten him on the events that make up his chaotic world.
The story interweaves young Tommy’s coming of age tale with the trials and travails of the hapless Northern Irish team over the nine months leading up to their ultimate game, in the stifling heat of Mexico at the world’s greatest festival of football.
As the hours tick down to the ultimate battle, with his lead striker crocked, Bingham is forced to place his faith in young rookie, Davey Campbell - “the next George Best”. Back home, Tommy waits anxiously for the biggest day of his life – because the day of the match is also his tenth birthday – and his father has promised to take him to the “top of the World” – the massive crane at Belfast Docks where Arthur works. From here he can see the whole of his world, but can he understand the lessons his father, inspired by the Greek philosopher Socrates, is trying to teach him?
This is a story of two nations, two teams, and a father and a son, the things that divide them and the things that unite us all. Set against the backdrop of the 1986 World Cup and the socio-political backgrounds of both nations – this is the story of the world’s smallest footballing nation, taking on its best. With laughter and passion, this is the ultimate story of the beautiful game and what it means.

"Shush" at the Abbey Theatre

The Abbey Theatre will be showing their very popular show Shush until July 20th. I recommended it to all. It is quite humorous and moving at the same time.

"Shush is a funny and insightful story of female friendship and its power to overcome life’s adversities."

See how birthday cakes and Bacardi help these women overcome their difficulties and learn how to live life one day at a time.

Losing sleep

It's not always easy being an Arsenal FC fan. Having already bought the new T-Shirt for next years matches, I am just ready for them to go out and get some top notch players. This year, I have a feeling, if we get the right players, we will go far.

I'm ready to have a good nights sleep again. Who's with me??

New TV Series: The Returned

The other day, a good friend of mine recommended the new TV series called The Returned. Saying it is one of his favorites at the moment. So, I decided to do some research on the series.

I found out that it is an eight-part French TV drama that is based off the 2004 movie called Les Revenants. The series plot starts off four years after a coach taking local teenagers on a school trip plunged down the side of a French mountain, killing several of the students on board. But as the town begins to plan a four year memorial for these students, the children start coming home, acting as if nothing happened, followed by the ghosts of the children that were killed.

It is not your normal zombie drama series. I am quite interested in seeing how it plays out.

So, to my readers. I urge you to give this show a shot and let me know what you think. You can watch it on Channel 4, on Sundays at 9 p.m.

Here is the link for an article about the series:

Tips on self taping

Hi guys!

Lots of you have asked me how to go about self-taping, as it is becoming much more prominent throughout the casting field.

First off, you don't have to rush out and buy the most expensive camera in the world. Ask around, friends, neighbors, cousins, aunts and uncles, for a decent standard camera.

Before you even attempt to audition, read the entire script. It's only then you can make a creative decision about how you interpret your scenes.

Be off book. It vastly increases you chances.

For the reading, ask an actor friend to feed you the lines. Non-actor readers usually sound dreadful and could potentially jar your performance.

If possible, get somebody to operate the camera. If not, stick it on a tripod.

Find yourself a blank and neutral wall, with no pictures to distract us in the background, just you against the wall.

Ident yourself. State your name, agent or self represented and part reading for. Include one long shot to show your build then go close up, head and shoulders.

Do the take opposite the reader and look at the reader.

Again, last point, and I am repeating myself here, your best chance is to be off book. And remember, what you don't say is as important as what you do say as the camera will be pointing at you at all times.

One not to be missed!!!

Oblivion Trailer - New Tom Cruise Movie

Quote of the Day

Be confident. Too many days are wasted comparing ourselves to others And wishing to be something that we aren't. Everybody has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it is only when you accept  everything that you are - and aren't - that you will truly succeed.
